Fall on the slopes of Mt. Mazama #42

Another fall scene inspired by our trip to Crater Lake, a.k.a. Mt Mazama. The reds and golds come from low lying bushes and forbes that grow high on the slopes of the mountain. Fall is my favorite time of year to go to Crater Lake.

Lorrie # 89 - Red Door Manor

As I approach the last 10 paintings of the challenge (late, but getting there nonetheless!), I was hoping to make each a larger, involved work... but such thinking has only gotten me further behind, because lately I've had less time than usual for painting. I know each of you understands what that's about! So, to the other extreme... this sketch was a late night "just do something!" impulse and done while lying on my stomach on the living room rug, with one hand supporting a teeny kitten who was sleeping on my neck. Perspective anomalies ensued that I could fix, but I haven't the time!! The pen is a super-soluble fine point marker that I used first, then added watercolor, which immediately makes the pen run wherever the brush touches it. It's fun, though more unpredictable than regular wet/wet painting.

Claire Painting 14: Martial Cottle Park

I'm very excited that a new Park, the Martial Cottle Park, is coming to an area near my home. It will focus on preserving a bit of history of the Santa Clara Valley. The valley was once promoted as the  "Valley of the Hearts Delight", after two centuries of an agricultural economy started by the Spanish missionaries. Over time the focus in the valley shifted from agriculture, including many orchards, to technology. We are very fortunate that Mr. Walter Cottle Lester generously gifted some of this special property to the County of Santa Clara in combination with the State of California for the purpose of a community park. The park is named after Mr. Lester's grandfather, and will include about 290 acres! 

  

Window in Rome Terry #9

This is the building across from our window in Rome.  I loved the reflections and sinplicity of it.  I had to photo it in the evening.  We had clouds and rain all day here in Detroit so I didn't want to wait till tomorrow when more rain is predicted.  Also I'm not sure I got the angle right but that's what it looked like in the photo I took.

Having a little fun while taking a different direction in painting for the moment using a new application on my iPad called Artrage. I needed a jolt of something new and this program allows an artist to change it up without the mess. It seems a brush type stylus has been developed and I think I'll need to try that out when it is available. Even so, using a finger on the screen to work out ideas and colors worked well.

Lorrie #87 - Sealife Spa

Along Highway 1 in the Big Sur region of California, there are many places to pull over and appreciate the view from high bluffs. Recently I did that and, with the aid of binoculars, spotted this idyllic little scene far below. A ring of protective rocks formed a calm pool of water where a sea otter floated motionless, sleeping (I presume), and looked suspended in air thanks to the wave-free clear water beneath it. Another otter was hauled out on a rock, brandt's cormorants perched on guano-whitewashed areas, and a trio of harbor seals rested. Some other critters came and went as well, that I didn't include here. This painting was done at home with guidance from a sketch made at the time in my travel journal.

 #16 - The moon was setting as the sun was rising.  This was my view (from my bed!) on the Monday after Easter!  I thought it made an interesting study!

#17 - As the weather has been warming up, I have been thinking about getting out into the garden soon.  Leafing thru some magazines, I saw a photo that inspired this study.

The New and the Old #41

I have a special fondness for snags. Here the roots caught my eye -- the old twisted roots and the new trees coming in to take over. I found this scene just a few feet from the rim of Crater Lake last fall. Painted from my laptop after I got home.
