Working on hot press paper was a lot different. It was harder to do a wash as it sets very quickly. However, I could get really fine detail when painting. That’s the main reason I went for the hot press – I wanted my underlying drawing to be pretty accurate and not draw on bumpy cold press paper.
I did not change much from the reference photo other than to edit out the cars in the driveway.
You can see my first draft below. I actually thought at this stage that I was done. However, after coming back with fresh eyes, I decided that the shadows needed to be darkened further, and the trees needed to be lightened up and faded in detail. I also put a sunny glaze on the house and snow to reflect the photograph.

Hi Krista: Your before and after is facinating. By working on your house some more you made it so friendly and inviting. Before it caught the coldness of winter, but wasn't as inviting. Two very different moods .... both good. Nice post!
Just beautiful, Krista! I would know a "Krista Meiser" anywhere : )---your style is very definitive. Thanks also for sharing both pics and for your thoughts as you worked. I have thought about trying the HP, because I do love detail ; ).
I love the comparison and I admire your use of WC on hot press as I discovered I don't like it at all.
Nice use of complements on this Krista! Love the purples/blues against the yellows/oranges. The snow is very nice in the front as it helps to establish a nice depth into the picture frame.
As to working on hot press, look for Susan Harrison-Tustain. Her work is done on hot press and its fabulous. She has a book that describes her process.
...Krista, this is gorgeous. Are you going to print it for your Christmas card next year. It's is perfect! I enjoyed seeing the WIP and finished product. I really like how you lightened the trees and put the sunny glaze on the wood. Beautiful...
