Painting #19 Koi - Mixed Media
While I was looking through my Maui photos for the Angel Trumpet Bloom I saw one of these Koi at the same park so I decided to paint them.
I did the first one in the sketchbook I took with me to Maui (a Moleskine!) and really kind of ruined it so I did it again on 140# WC paper.
This time I did the fish in colored pencil and washed watercolor over the top and love the washy look about it.
I have been looking through my photos and other pictures that I have saved to paint 'someday' and 'someday' has finally come with this challenge. Now I need to live to be 100 to paint all that I have saved! lol

This is really cool! I love that watery, watery water, and the color in the fish is so vibrant. Did you use regular colored pencil or watercolor pencil? The blues and greens look so pretty...
This is gorgeous, Teri! I love the colors! The colored pencil works : )
This really works! It is lovely. Now I want to try a wash over colored pencil. I'm not sure I would have thought of it.
I just discovered I can click on the image and make it even larger. Duh! I'm really not very computer savey..... but if anyone else hasn't clicked on this, do try it. It just makes it that much better!
Thanks. I used regular colored pencils and was surprised that some of the watercolor stayed on the cp image.
Elva, soon you will know all these tricks such as clicking and enlarging.
This combination of pencil and watercolor really works! The result is absolutely stunning and eye-catching. I'm so glad that you painted it and have shared it here!
Love how you're branching out, Teri! Lovely work here. With the color of the water going over the fish, it gives a lot of depth.
Oh yes, I agree... I love the watery effect. I've also gone through old photos, looking for things to paint. It brings back memories, too, when we're painting them. Maui sounds like a great vacation.
