Kelly - Paintings 5, 6 & 7

Against dark grey skies and bright white snow, the red of a winter cardinal is vibrant and impossible to ignore. With our first winter days finally showing up, all I had to do was look out my window to see their incredible color. I painted three cardinals in similar poses in three styles...

(watercolor...with white oil pastel scraped into background for snow)

(watercolor...with white acrylic splattered over top for snow)

(oil pastel)

Love the pil-pastel version here - so fiery and full of emotion! Am a new follower here!

Love these glimpses of red in the grey snow. And what a nice rich red you got with those watercolors. I really like when you do the same subject in three styles, it is fun to see you experiment.

Thank you for visiting, Martina. I stopped by your blog and admired your paintings. I love your style!!

Thanks, Kristin. I built the red up with layers...starting with yellow....then orange....then red--especially in the first painting, which is more stylized with the rough snow in the background.

Great variations. I don't know which I like best. All of them make me miss cardinals. I'm a long way from cardinal country now.

The are lovely, Kelly! I really love the watercolor. It's a mediaium that I struggle with but love to try.
