I was really attracted to the brilliant colors in the apples, nice warm colors set up against a cool silvery blue backdrop. Salt used in the wash for the tin achieved the look I wanted. It was a little harder to do the water, or to make the apples look like they were in the water and not just floating in air. Ellipses are always a challenge for me, as well as getting the colors their brilliancy, but I’m pleased at how it turned out.
Also blogged about on my personal blog, describing a more personal point of view. Click on my blog link at left, then my 100 Paintings Gallery.

Wow, these are so realistic I could almost bob for them. The water shadows on the apples and bucket really work well. I can see why you were attracted to them.
...I visited your blog a little earlier and said the same thing Teri said!! I love the shadows you used to show they are half submerged in water. Just beautiful...
This is an amazing painting. I think you've done a super job of capturing the bucket, apples, water and colors. The apples in the water look 'believable' to me -- they all look like the waterline is hitting in the same place (even top of the water). I think this would be a great image on the front of some note cards for fall. ;-)
LOVE the texture on the tub and all those rich, delicious colors on the apples. Nice work!
Seeing the picture again, I must say it looks like the light is shining on them. Really, really nice.
You really handled the water well -and caught those elusive elipticals too! Well done!
Nice job, Krista! Love the brilliant jewel tones in the apples and the salt work in the tin. You've definitely captured the look of floating apples.
Ellipses…try drawing a rectangle around the area you're drawing the ellipse in, choose your corner and draw your ellipse. Then mirror that shape in the box above or below.
Shadows…a camera will almost always "steal" color from shadows and whereas the shadow in the ref reads as a medium gray, consider adding colors to make your gray more lively next time!
Excellent job!
I love this Krista! Going now to see what you wrote on your blog~~
