#18 Crystal!

I attend a painting class once a week. For the last couple of weeks we have been painting a 'large picture' (this was 24"square) of crystal and tried to capture the reflections and glints, the values and colour on a wide expanse of space. I would really appreciate your critical comments on this painting.

Without know what areas you are seeking comment about specifically let me give you my impressions of this piece....

Love the background. The pink "material" looks like a piece of velvet and steals the show from the crystal. The crystal is well drawn and it reads as glass. The top of the tall vase is especially well done.

Crystal reflects EVERYTHING around it - greens, blues, purples, yellows reds, etc., and I really don't see too much of those colors in either piece of crystal. I would love to see the grayed blues, greens and purples in place of some of the grayed grays.

Crystal is one of those wonderfully reward subjects to paint as well as crazy-making trying to get all the facets to read right and to "glint" as glass does. BRAVO to you for tackling it!

A wonderful piece!

Wow! This is a difficult subject. It does look like crystal. I agree with Laure that touches of other colors rather than so much grey (sometimes we have to take artistic license). I especially like the reflections on the back side of the bowl on left.

I would not have had the backdrop go from red to white right along the left edge of the vase. It brings too much attention to that spot. I think just a little one way or the other would be better. ... but maybe you were supposed to paint excactly what you saw.

Good job on a difficult subject!
