Liz #16, 17, 18, and #19 Watercolor self portraits 12 x 12

#19

#18

#17

#16 At our last drawing class Phil Frey had us divide our small mirrors into quarters, and my self portrait was humanly proportioned. I went home, marked my mirror and used watercolors. I am working on defining shapes of color instead of layering many, many brushstrokes as in the one above. I am adjusting to not using white.

It is so neat to see these different "takes" and get a sense of your countenance, too. Doing portraits in watercolor with some freedom--as opposed to tightly planning and controlling the pigment at every step--is not easy! (at least, that's my experience). I like the unexpected and dynamic things that are going on in many different places of your pictures.

Wow, Liz...you were busy! I like how you pull all the colors in. I think I've only done one self-portrait in my life, and that was when I was in the first grade!

wow these are so lively and vibrant! And you are so brave. It looks like you captured white space from the picture in the last one, number 18; that really makes it shine.
