#46 Bluebird Comparison

Blue Version

Yellow Green Version

Here are two very similar pieces and I'm hoping for some critiquing.

Some of you may remember a similar posting back in early June (#26). That one was straight out of my sketchbook and done on location. A friend asked for a little Yellowstone sketch and so I thought I do this subject for him. (I hate tearing pages out of my sketchbook and hoped I could make some improvements). The little tree has been a favorite of both the friend and us for years.

These are both drawn after I got home. I won't say now which one of these I did first. I'm very curious which one you like best and any other pertinent comments.

Hi Elva, I honestly love more yellow version as it is the great contrast for the blue bird. However, the blue version is carying different message (in my opinion of course). Seems to be that a blue version is all about the tree and the air, the little birdy is a little lost. In the blue piece I love the selection of the format. Long tree, long format. Great Job!! Thanks, Irina (www.IrinaSztukowski.com)

Quite honestly I love everything you do, however, I definitely love the first version! but I think the bluebird needs to be darkened just a little to bring him forward.

Hi Elva!

If your format is sketchbook size, I like the yellow-green composition best. It's more intimate; the placement of the tree cavity makes me feel like I am following the bird right into the nest.

I think the blue version works for a larger size painting.

Both are great!

Thank you for your feedback! I did the blue one first. My husband hated the scratchy background and it seemed cold, whereas my original drawing done on location in my small sketchbook, has the yellow green background. (there was a hillside behind the tree). I like the sunny feel of the second one.
Teri is right, the bluebird needs more emphasis.
