Golden-crowned Kinglet #16

I painted this one for my blog and then got so busy I forgot to post it here. I seldom see golden-crowned kinglets, and when I do the tiny little birds are usually way up in the tree tops; but, not long ago, I was at eye level with a couple of them. The male (this is a male) can totally hide his bright red crown, but he was interacting with another and I got to see the beautiful flash of color. My photos were lousy, but part of the joy of being an artist is coming home and doing my best to paint what I saw.

Painted on 140# Cold press Arches ... a lovely paper!

...he's really sweet, Elva. I also like how you handled the pines boughs, bringing them forward with the light paint and white space, and pushing them back with the darker shades. (I saw a male and female this weekend too...the male displayed his orange crown really well. I don't normally get to see that!!)

Amazing details in his feathers and also in the greens.
