Kelly - Painting 3

Watercolor

This song sparrow had been scratching through a bed of pine needles under a white pine in the snow, looking for something to eat. The snow had been churned up from all the birds who had been there previously digging through the pine needles. The colors and shades of the dirt and pine needles matched the Song Sparrow and he was well camouflaged.

Precious! The bird is wonderful, and so sweet in that action moment of kicking its feet through the debris. The needles are a nice sharp (pun!) contrast against the splatter and snow.

This captures a cool moment. I like the motion you captured and the detail in the needles and bird is nice. Cool observation about bird behavior too.

Well done. Your song sparrow captures both the detail and the giz of the little fellas.

...thanks, Lorrie, Kristin, and Elva! I think I might like to repaint this fellow on tan paper using gouache. I've never used it before, but I want to try.

Amazing how you captured the details in the front for the needles and the bird, but left the background so soft. The underbelly of the bird really shows a 'softness' that I would expect from his belly.
