Lorrie #65 - Cormorants at Año Nuevo

Cormorants at Año Nuevo, watercolor 7 x 10 inches
I haven't painted much over the holidays, but it's time to get back into painting and posting if I'm going to make 100 by middle of February (when I started, last year)!! This painting is a "sketch" begun on site, but that I worked on at home later. It's one of the views at Año Nuevo State Park where I volunteer as a docent. I had set this aside, thinking to improve it... but today I was at the park and saw this scene again, which inspired me to just post this and get on with it!!

...I love the Rock with all the cormorants on it! Matty was just standing over my shoulder, and he likes it too! You're in the final stretch! Good luck...

I don't know what you mean about improving this. It has a really nice, fresh quality with a lot of emotion and movement. It captures the weight of the winter sky over the ocean, which I love and looks like a sketch painted quickly on the spot. I am curious though what you would change?

Hey Kristin, I wanted more shading on the arch of rock so it would look rounder, like it is. It looks kinda flat. I am sooo reluctant to darken things sometimes, even though it "should be" to read as 3D more convincingly.

I love watching the cormorants out on the rocks. This captures it beautifully.

I like how you have captured the water in the foreground -- lots of interesting texture to look at.
